So I definetely felt kind of awkward taking self portraits. It's something I'm not really practiced in.. so I resorted to the mirror. I think my favorite ended up being the first or fourth. I liked that they weren't too obviously 'smiling in the mirror', and I think that the black and white are most intense in those two photos.
hi! So, i also took a few mirror pictures in this assigment shah. But I love the first and the fourth pictures. I love how in the fourth picture you agents looking at the camera and i love the background.. its really different. i love how we can't see your body which makes it kind of mysterious in a way.. good job :)
ReplyDeleteHey! I think that the first and second are my favorite of your self portraits. Especially the first one and how it matches up with the photographer you chose for your inspiration. The last one I think would be a lot more expressive if the white strip at the bottom were cropped out. I didn't even notice it was a bathroom mirror picture and that shows skill.
ReplyDeletehi dominique! Great job with these, they're all awesome! I definitely think the first one is the winner for me. I like how mysterious it is since the only part of your face that you can see is your eyes. I also like how the only part of the picture that is in focus is you; it makes the viewer really focus on your eyes. The lighting is also very cool! Good job!
ReplyDeleteHey Dominique!
ReplyDeleteLove the self portraits! My favorites is the first one and the last one. I really like the photo is only focusing on your eyes and how you can see the shadows too. Also on the last photo I love how you look like your looking at something else and not focusing on looking at the camera. This photo was really creative way of doing a self portrait. Enjoyed all the photos! Fantastic job! Keep it up!
Hi Dominique,
ReplyDeleteI'm glad that you were able to acknowledge any reservations you had about doing a self portrait. It is hard to put yourself in front of the lens, but part of the assignment was to not only push you outside of your comfort zone, but also see how you would solve the problem of producing a self portrait if you didnt want to actually take your image. I'm glad you decided to do something more traditional despite your awkwardness about it. There are so many ways to make a "self portrait" that don't necessarily have to include your physical self in the image. Its good that you acknowledged relying on using a mirror to help you with this assignment; sticking with what you know to help move past any trouble you were having making an image is a good idea. With that said I think that they are all strong images, great tonal range, lighting, composition and framing. I am particularly fond of the last one with just your face and the curtain background. I think its shows a little more creativity, and is also great because its not a typical flattering portrait. Its quirky and I would actually disagree with Jalen that the white strip at the bottom needs to be there. It adds some amount of visual context as to why your head is kinda tilted up and cut off in the image, it provides a nice visual barrier to your placement in the frame. Great job on these!!
